Neverending Nightmares is a game with no combat, you cannot fight back against enemies and once you are spotted by an enemy, it can be very hard to escape. Every step in Neverending Nightmares is a calculated one, and once you get into the games design and twisted nightmarish world, you can feel that every new location, loop from room-to-room is a calculated step by Gilgenbach. For a game like this however, the limitations are evident and might put off some who crave a world filled with interactive elements and open world exploration. The score, composed by Skyler McGlothlin also offers an ominous and dread filled collection of creepy tunes to haunt you as you progress. Sound design is excellent too, from the creaky floorboards as you wander around the haunted house to the institutionalized fear of slamming cell doors and screams of the damned echo around you in the asylum can create a tense and nervy atmosphere. It gives the game a very personalized feel that perhaps Gilgenbach was aiming for.

The graphical design of the game gives it an extra edge over the competition and a genuinely unique look for a horror game and cannot be commended enough.
PERSONAL NIGHTMARE GOG FULL
The sketch-like drawings are full of interesting and at times freaky imagery and while the majority of the game is in black and white, blood is an ominous thick red glow, while object that can be interacted with such as doors, candles and axes are also coloured in. The graphical design on display here is excellent.

It is simple, basic and works for a game of this type. The gameplay mechanics in Neverending Nightmares are sparse and simplistic, the arrow keys determine your movement, the Shift key allows you to run, but not for very long, while the Space Bar opens doors and picks up/looks at objects in closer detail. Simply put, in Neverending Nightmares you play as Thomas, who is trapped in a nightmare, one filled with nightmarish ghouls, his (is she/isn’t she dead) sister and themes of murder, suicide and self-mutilation. Neverending Nightmares uses these personal nightmares and makes for a tense, creepy and at times beautiful psychological horror game. It is developed by Infinitap Games and according to an interview with GameSpot, lead designer Matt Gilgenbach states that the game is “channeling very specific imagery from intrusive thoughts that I’ve suffered from because of my OCD”. Neverending Nightmares is a surreal and disturbing game with an unique visual style that makes it stand out from most horror games out there.
